Guadalupe Center: Out of School Time (OST) Summer School Program
Our OST Summer School program at Guadalupe Center is designed to provide students with academic support, enrichment activities, social-emotional learning, and interactive family engagement events. We aim to address the unique challenges our students face due to socio-economic issues and the educational disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Summer School Overview
Our six-week Summer School program caters to nearly 250 students, running Monday to Thursday from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM. Our students often start one to two years behind academically compared to their more affluent peers. Our Summer School OST program is crucial for fostering continuous academic growth and helping them catch up by the time they leave Guadalupe Center while also providing them with fun and engaging enrichment activities.
The Goal of the Program is to:
- Prevent summer learning loss through academic support
- Get students who are behind back on track
- Boast academic results for our students
- Develop teamwork skills and effective communication
- Enhance self-esteem and boost confidence
Beyond academics, our Summer School includes engaging activities and enrichment opportunities including:
- STEAM activities
- Arts and crafts
- Outdoor games and activities
- Weekly field trips to cultural and recreational sites
- Partnerships with local organizations including Wheeler Farm, Silver Lake, Clark Planetarium, and the Dinosaur Museum.
Measurable Outcomes
We set clear academic goals, expecting students to show improvement from pre-tests to post-tests, with even maintaining proficiency seen as a success. In 2022, 98% of students attending at least 20 days showed positive gains in reading and math, with up to 1.7% improvement per day.
Our OST Summer School program is essential in empowering our students to reach their full potential and succeed academically and beyond.
